Dianne Lam “What was in my mind, what is in my mind?” (A Retrospective) 2010 LOOKING BACKWARD AND FORWARD AT THE SAME TIME WHAT HAS CHANGED?

LOOKING BACKWARD AND FORWARD AT THE SAME TIME

WHAT HAS CHANGED?

My mixed media abstract paintings which hovered on the verge of the figurative have now become purely abstract. (After unearthing old pieces for show, may consider “Hovering on the verge of the figurative” again)

WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED?

My passion for both sculpture and painting. Like sculptures, my paintings are objects...not pictures

How I paint: I am still chicken about solid colors and build the paintings by using thin washes of different colors to create the space. The goal is to create a sense of depth.

My vision of things veiled---seen but not seen, where ambiguity reigns, leaving the viewers’s minds free to oscillate between various states: will, memory and perception.

The tension between the exciting promises in clutter: of line;, mass and texture, and deep reflective space.

A drive to understand scale: when is large, tiny and small monumental?

My passion for words:; most works are not finished until words come to the piece. When the words come, sometimes the paintings change.

My conflicting passions for rectilinear forms and the organic both in nature and in the mind.

My works emerge from a state of mind and are driven by the desire to invoke a state of mind in the viewer.
